The Art of Serving
Huh. So you want to serve? Sure, just be sure to get it over the net. As a person who has served the ball into the net quite a few times, hopefully I'll help you out a bit.

For many of you, whether you're a beginner or not, you probably know that there's two type of serves. Overhand, and underhand. There's a whole bunch of other types, but these two are the standardized and conventional kinds of serves. I think everything in between is borderline unprofessional; quite odd.

Underhand Serve

1) Face the Net! If you don't face the net, how WILL you get the ball over the net? Hitting it backwards? Go for it, try it, but don't be surprised if it doesn't make it.
2) Ball begins at waist level. Not too high, not too low.
3) The player should lean forward as he or she swings their arm foreward and makes contact with the ball.
4) The hand holding the ball is dropped just before the contact.
5) The player should then hit the ball underneath with the fist or heel of the hand.

It is also important to remember that you must always, always fall through. Don't stop half way.

Overhand

Serving the ball over hand is a bit harder than serving it underhand, but if you can master it, chances are you are likely to receive more aces. Period. Overhand has a lot of power if used properly, which is one of the major reasons why professionals never use underhand. The following is quite important in serving a wicked serve:

ARM TOSS

HAND UP AND BACK BEFORE THE TOSS

SHIFT

SWING TO TARGET
-Use a firm wrist throughout your serve.
-Contact with heel of hand through middle back of ball.
-The contact should sound like a "thud", not a "slap" sound. Slaps are not likely to give the ball much power.
-Hand follows ball to target.

It always more important to master the accuracy of your serve before power. It does no one on your team, including yourself, any good if your ball can't land on the other side of the court in the first place. As always, keep this in mind.
